The newfies at Lynn Kay Kennels come in Black, Brown, Gray, Fawn, Landseers and Black & White with any variation. You will see all colors throughout the site from all the dogs we have owned and sold to our customers. They have dry mouths, tight eyes, large heads with lots of wrinkles.
Some individuals on the web will say there is no such thing as a dry mouth newfie, but that just means they have never seen one or owned one. We have a wide variety selection of females and males to choose from. I have five kids and they all have newfies in their homes that we raise and breed together. Our family is now three generations of raising these beautiful gentle giants. Perfect Dog For Busy People
One of the things that stand out about the Newfoundland is their size, sweet temperament and nature. They are often called a Newfy, Newfie and Newf and are considered a “working dog”. Newfoundlands are known for being loving gentle giants. They make great family companions and are wonderful around children. They are very social and playful, especially where there is water and kids. Although Newfies are big dogs, they are very trainable, highly intelligent, eager to please and very sensitive when you raise your voice which makes them a great fit for any owner. They are in tune with their owners and helps when training is consistent, calm and enforced with positive rewards and praise.
These dogs can adapt to apartment living but would require walks so that they are given enough exercise and attention. Much better suited for larger homes which give them the space and room to roam. Surprisingly, they do well in just about any climate. We have shipped our puppies all over the United States and Canada. As with all dogs they can be sensitive to heat so we like to shave our dogs during the summer so that they are cooler in the higher temperature areas.
Newfies have a double coat. The undercoat is water resistant while the outer coat is coarse and full. Our dogs tend to shed heavily once a year as the seasons change, but sometimes it might be twice a year. In general, it’s nice to brush them weekly to keep their coat clean and nice and fluffy. They only require an occasional bath if they have been swimming or have gotten real dirty out playing in the mud.
Additionally, you will need to care for their nails, ears and teeth. If their nails get too long it can make their movement uncomfortable and or painful to walk. Monthly trimming is usually recommended. The ears are more prone to trapping dirt, debris and moisture which can lead to ear infections. You will want to make sure and check their ears weekly to ensure they are dry and clean. We tend to use peroxide or alcohol whips for cleaning. Finally, dental care for your dog’s teeth is one of the most common health issues which can be prevented by brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste weekly can help prevent painful dental disease. You can even help your effort by talking with your veterinarian on dental hygiene chews and a dental diet. It’s very important that you get your new Newfoundland puppy used to having their mouth, paws and ears handled in the early stages of development which will make grooming a much easier experience as they grow. This is also a nice bonding experience that both you and your dog will enjoy.
